National Coalition on IP Higher Education (NICHE)

The National Coalition on IP Higher Education (NICHE) is a convergence of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines. It aims to promote holistic, integrated, relevant, and culture-sensitive education based on understanding and respect of indigenous peoples’ (IP) rights as a key to social transformation and human development. It is guided by the provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997 and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in contributing to the promotion and protection of the Indigenous Peoples’ cultural integrity through higher education. It was established in August 2008 with the main objective of building an alliance among state and non-state colleges and universities in the Philippines with IP population. Its main purpose is to collectively promote IP rights to a relevant and appropriate higher education program for the IPs in the Philippines. In response to the Commission on Higher Education Memoradum Order No. 02 Series of 2019: Integration of Indigenous Peoples’ (IP) Studies/Educatin into Relevant Higher Education Curricula in mind, NICHE’s programs and services are aligned to the four pillars of higher education – access to education, instruction, research, and community service.
